Due to the drama's popularity, Netflix announced in January that "House of Cards" will be renewed for a fifth season, Entertainment Weekly reported. It was also reported by the same publication that the creator and showrunner of "House of Cards" Beau Willimon will not return, but he wishes that the show will continue its success.

Willmon was quoted as saying "After five years and four seasons, it's time for me to move on to new endeavors.... and leave it in the hands of a very capable team."

Since the announcement of "House of Cards" season 5, there had been a lot of speculations about season 5's plot, returning characters and supposed released date swirling online.

Based on earlier season premieres, Rompers prediction suggests that "House of Cards" may be the last season and could be released anytime in March 2017. "House of Cards" season 1 and season 2 was released in Feb. 1, 2013 and Feb. 14, 2014 respectively, while season 3 and season 4 was released in Feb. 27, 2015 and March 4, 2016 respectively.

The global provider of streaming movies and TV series Netflix, which has an estimated 75 million subscribers, has yet to issue an official statement on when they plan to release "House of Cards" season 5; however, if they will follow their tradition in releasing the American political thriller series, fans can expect a second week of March 2017 release.

Meanwhile, a contradicting rumor says that the fifth season of "House of Cards" will be released on Jan. 20, 2017 to coincide with the presidential inauguration.

Speculations also suggest that Frank Underwood's (played by Kevin Spacey) secret service agent Edward Meechum, played by Nathan Darrow, will return to the fifth installment. It is said that Meechum will be returning in Frank's dream, since characters that are dead are not entirely gone in the series, as Frank's dream could always bring them back.
