Ever since Tom Holland has been tapped to play the MCU's version of Peter Parker, it was clear that a rebirth of the "Spider-Man" franchise is happening.

Recently, Marvel officially laid the ground work for the next solo film of the web-slinging hero with the title (excuse the pun) "Homecoming" and it is eyeing 'Batman' Michael Keaton as a villain, Variety reported.

Keaton's successful acting career was largely attributed to his critically-acclaimed performance in earlier Tim Burton "Batman" films. The negotiation is reportedly in the early stage as of now and both Marvel and Sony have yet to issue an official statement on the matter.

Ironically, Keaton was recently honored at the Oscar's for his work in "Birdman" that tackles the struggle of a washed-up celebrity who was best known for his past superhero movies. The film is both a self-satire parallelism on Keaton's part and at the same time a close scrutiny of the superhero trend in Hollywood. "Birdman" picked up Oscars for Best Picture, Director, Original Screenplay, and Cinematography.

Marvel has been tight-lipped about the plot details on "Spider-Man: Homecoming" other than that it will take place at a time where Peter Parker is already the personification of "Spider-Man." Several villains have been introduced in the earlier "Spider-Man" films such as "Green Goblin," "Lizard" and "Electro." Rumor has it that should Keaton agree to join the ensemble of the film, he might play the role of a villain called "The Vulture" or Daily Bigle publisher J. Jonah Jameson.

Joining Holland in the film is another Hollywood veteran Marisa Tomei who will play Aunt May. Other members of the ensemble is yet to be cast but Marvel boss Kevin Feige said that the studio is open in the idea of having other MCU heroes featured in the "Spider-Man" reboot, EW reported.

"Spider-Man: Homecoming" opens on July 7, 2017. John Watts will direct the film.
