Gong Ji Chul, better known as Gong Yoo, is going to be back on the television screens, as he recently confirmed to take over the lead male role in tvN's upcoming fantasy drama.


On April 20, Wednesday, director Yoon Ha Rim of Hwa and Dam Pictures' revealed that the actor's follow-up to 2012's "Big" is a new drama with the working title of "Goblin" ("Dokkaebi"). It comes from writer Kim Eun Sok, who brought the mega-hit TV series such as "Descendants of the Sun" and "The Heirs."

Yoon went ahead to say that they have been preparing to make this TV drama in the past three years, even before "Descendants of the Sun" was made. He stressed that the upcoming drama will concentrate on dokkaebi, a mythical being that shows up in many old Korean folktales, considering that the character has not been made as the main topic in previous' dramas yet.

"With the help of Kim Eun Sook's writing talent in telling a romance story, this drama is bound to be another of Kim Eun Sook's representative romantic comedies," Soompi quoted Yoon as saying. "I am confident that this will be a new type of drama for the viewers." 

The upcoming drama will recount the unique fantasy romance story of a dokkaebi (Gong, who is on a quest to find a human bride to end his immortal life and an angel of death, who suffers amnesia. The two meet somewhere between fate and a curse and must live together, as they help dead souls to go through the afterlife.

Writer Kim has also expressed her gratitude to the actor for accepting the offer and revealed that Gong is an actor that she have always had high expectations of, one of the factors that lead her to anticipate working with the actor.

"When I met up with Gong Yoo at a personal gathering, I saw what a luxurious actor he was, and became certain that he would be the best actor for the lead character in 'Goblin," All K-pop quoted writer Kim as saying, when asked about the reason behind casting the actor.

It has been learned that the filming of the drama will commence once the casting is finished for the core characters. The drama is scheduled to broadcast in November on tvN's Friday-Saturday drama timeslot.
