"Captain America: Civil War" reached more than $940 million worldwide at the box office over the weekend. The figure showed that it is on its way of becoming Marvel's biggest hit to date.

In two straight weeks, "Civil War" racked up 72.6 million in the United States and over $156 million internationally, according to BGR. The superhero blockbuster film is presently running to be the biggest film ever by Marvel. It is expected to hit 1 billion this week, an impressive milestone for the film and for the studio at the same time.

On May 15, Sunday, Marvel's 13 films earned a total sales of more than $10 billion at the box office. Overall, the film that starred Chris Evans as "Captain America" received good ratings from both critics and fans. It got a critic score of 90 percent and a fan rating of 91 percent from Rotten Tomatoes, the publication claimed.

"Civil War" was a successful action-packed superhero film  that is predicted to surpass the record of the last Marvel movie, "Avengers: Age of Ultron." The movie's global box office gross pulled in $1.4 billion.

For the record, the first "Captain America" collected $177 million at the box office in 2011. Its follow up franchise in 2014 "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" garnered a total of $260 million globally at the box office.

With the box office trend of "Civil War," it is not too far from becoming the seventh superhero movie to reach $1 billion at the box office. It is predicted to follow the path of the blockbuster superhero flicks, including "The Avengers" ($1.52 billion), "Avengers: Age of Ultron" ($1.41 billion), "Iron Man 3" ($1.22 billion), "The Dark Knight Rises" ($1.09 billion) and "The Dark Knight" ($1.04 billion).

"The Jungle Book" made it in the second place at the box office after "Captain America: Civil War." "The Jungle Book" earned $17.8 million in the U.S., $5.2 million globally and grossed $828.1 million in its fifth week.

In other news, overseas player including Jodie Foster's offering, "Money Monster" that reunited Hollywood A-lists George Clooney and Julia Roberts earned $15 million domestically and $4.7 million globally. "The Darkness," a supernatural horror film that starred Kevin Bacon hit $5.2 million on its opening finished at fourth place, ABC News reported.
