Sony is still not confirming the existence of the PlayStation NEO 4K or the PlayStation 4.5 but there is an increasing number of rumors of its release date and reportedly cheaper production costs.
What is known about the upcoming upgraded PS4 console is that it would be able to run games at 4K resolution while still holding up to 60 frames per second. The PlayStation NEO or PlayStation 4.5 has also been partly-confirmed by a French video game distributor and a slide from AMD's recent presentation.
AMD has a deal with Sony to produce the chips that are used on their consoles. The current line of consoles from the company still uses a 28-nanometer planar transistor.
With AMD planning to move on to a smaller-sized chip, the video game company would need to adjust. They would have to pay for additional costs if they wanted AMD to continue producing their chips for the PS4.
The obvious win-win solution was to use the smaller 14-nanometer FinFET transistors. Sony could have decided to use them on a new console instead, which would be the PlayStation NEO 4K or the PlayStation 4.5.
Since AMD's new method would be cheaper and better, Sony would also have to pay less for the costs. However, it is not enough to jump a whole generation of consoles forward.
Sony's PlayStation NEO 4K would be their product with the new chips from AMD, Design & Trend reported. The PlayStation 4.5 would have slightly better processing power than the current PS4.
All games that will be released starting on October would be required to feature a NEO mode that would be run for the new upgraded console. It could be the version that would feature 4K capability with the 60 fps framerate.
Sony could be rolling out the new console before September, BREATHEcast has learned. It could even arrive earlier than the PlayStation VR headset.
Fans are expecting Sony to announce the PlayStation NEO 4K or the PlayStation 4.5 during their press conference at the E3 2016 event on June 13. The company would then reveal more details about the upgraded PS4.
