Andre Berto believes Gennady Golovkin will beat Saul "Canelo" Alvarez if the highly anticipated showdown between the two middleweight boxing superstars happen in the near future.
Berto said in a TMZ boxing news he will put his money on Golovkin if the proposed big-money bout come into fruition. The 32-year-old added he is willing to take on the winner of the fight.
"I probably pick GGG to win," said Berto, who owns a 31-4 record with 24 knockouts. "I would definitely like to fight the winner, because it would come with that check."
Alvarez, who has racked up 47 wins against just one defeat and one draw in his 11-year professional career, recently relinquished the World Boxing Council middleweight title after successfully defending it against Amir Khan on May 7. The Mexican ran away with a sixth-round knockout loss over his British challenger.
Alvarez had to defend the title against Golovkin -- the then-mandatory challenger to the crown -- but Canelo opted to vacate the title, dashing fans' hope of seeing the two middleweight superstars clash this year. Berto said Alvarez just made a business move, knowing that he could still get a big paycheck with or without the unbeaten Kazakh.
"I think it was a business move," Berto said. "A business move to make that money and I don't think that he feels it time for the GGG fight yet. I think GGG needs him, he doesn't need Golovkin."
Meanwhile, Golovkin and his camp are still holding out hope Canelo will have a change of heart and decide to accept the bout later this year. The unbeaten knockout artist is planning to have one more fight this year.
Promoter Tom Loeffler told BoxingScene the fight with Alvarez is still their top priority at this point, but they are also willing to strike a deal to face Billy Joe Saunders, Danny Jacobs or Chris Eubank Jr. Loeffler also revealed Top Rank Promotions CEO Bob Arum wants a showdown between Golovkin and Gilberto Ramirez.
Golovkin is coming off a second-round knockout win against Dominic Wade in April. The 33-year-old Kazakh is currently the reigning WBC, World Boxing Association, International Boxing Federation and International Boxing Organization middleweight champion.
