"Awkward" season 5 recently aired its finale episode, but viewers are still waiting for an announcement whether or not MTV will renew the show.

In an interview with TV Line, co-showrunners Mike Chessler and Chris Alberghini dished on what could happen to Matty (Beau Mirchoff) and Jenna (Ashley Rickards) if the show was renewed.

According to Alberghini, they designed the finale episode for season 5 to be somewhat conclusive primarily because they still do not have any idea whether the series will return next season.

"There were a lot of discussions about how much we wanted to wrap everything up. We just wanted to get to a place where this era in their lives feels like it has adequate resolution without completely setting anything in stone that might affect a later season of the show," he said.

Meanwhile, the co-showrunners also talked about Sadie (Molly Tarlov) and why they felt it was necessary for her to have a huge moment in the finale episode.

"We started talking about wanting all of the characters to have big moments at the end of season, and we all agreed that Sadie was due for a comeuppance. She's had some hard times with her parents, but her friends have never fully called her out on how bitchy she can be. We really liked the idea of taking what happened in the pilot and turning it on its ear. We loved the idea of her being in Jenna's shoes, she was the one who really enjoyed the rumor that Jenna tried to kill herself," Chessler said.

In other news, there were some ongoing rumors that Matty could eventually end up with Jenna's mom Lacey (Nikki DeLoach), especially considering how close the two are with each other.

According to Alberghini, "Those two actors obviously have a lot of chemistry, and they play off each other well, but no. We'd never go there. Oh my God, can you imagine Matty sleeping with Jenna's mom? That would ruin the entire show!"

"Awkward" season 5 aired its final episode on May 24 at 10 p.m. ET on MTV.
