With the return of “Vikings” Season 4, episode 11 slated to premiere in July, fans of the hit History channel series have started to scour the internet, in the hopes of finding spoilers online. Series creator Michael Hirst revealed that Season 4B will focus on Ragnar’s (Travis Fimmel) sons, as well as his unfinished feud with Rollo (Clive Standen).
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the "Vikings" creator clarified his last statement, in which he said that there will be a "final reckoning" between Ragnar and Rollo in Season 4. Hirst explained that Ragnar did not raid Paris because he wanted the power, but instead it was because he felt betrayed by Rollo. He also pointed out that Fimmel's character resorted to taking drugs as a way to cope and mask his insecurities.
Hirst, however, admitted that perhaps, a part of Ragnar was actually a bit "suicidial," hoping that he will die in the battle with Rollo.
"Ragnar's not motivating the Vikings, and I think there's a slightly suicidal sense about going into battle in that way. He wanted to get into a personal battle with Rollo, and I think he would have been happy if they both died," he explained.
Meanwhile, speaking of the highly talked about time jump in "Vikings" Season 4 episode 10, Hirst admitted that he does not know exactly how long that was. He explained that it was just long enough for Ragnar's sons to grow up, so they will be able to explore their characters even further. Hirst hinted that while some of them will be accepting of their father's return, some will be more than happy to kill him thinking that he has betrayed them.
While fans were curious to see what happened to Ragnar during his long journey, Hirst explained that they will not be revealing any of that when "Vikings" Season 4 returns. Although Travis Fimmel, himself, wanted to know the Ragnar's backstory, Hirst admitted that fans will just have to use their imagination to see what he has been up to.
"What could he say? 'Oh, I went here, or there.' What would that mean? Nothing? 'I am here. I am still alive. I am in a state of being. You have to deal with it.'"
