Sony Santa Monica creative director Cory Barlog revealed a lot of information in a statement about the upcoming video game, and that includes where it takes place in the protagonist's life. He confirmed that this sequel will be set many years after the third game and also players will only play the bearded hero in the entire game. He also confirmed that it will not be an open world type of game, but it will have a semi-open world feeling.

Barlog also explained that the gameplay of this new sequel will be totally new and redone completely. They will continue the storyline of the hero, but they will be bringing it to the Norse mythology. He added that the new behind-the-back camera perspective was done to let the player have a more intimate experience with the hero.

Barlog said to IGN in an interview that Kratos is afraid for his son that he might get the side effect of becoming a god, which was getting enraged with bloodlust. The development team also wanted to tell the story of father this time around since he has a son now, who also comes along with him during his travels. Getting angry with his son is also a mechanic in this game as he scolded his son, the rage meter filled up, but when his son apologized, the rage meter lessened.

According to Barlog, this new sequel will be about Kratos teaching his son how to become a good god, and at the same time, his son will be teaching his father about how to become a human again. The creative director assured that there will be more information on the mechanics of the father and son relationship at a later date, and there will be more surprises for the fans and curious gamers of the series with something unexpected.
