"Empire" season 3 will continue to put Cookie Lyon (Taraji P. Henson) and Lucious' (Terrence Howard) relationship to the test.

In the finale episode for season 2, Cookie decided to stay away from Lucious after the latter wed Anika (Grace Gealey).

Cookie was shocked with Lucious' decision especially since things have been going to well for them.

Even though Cookie previously denied still having feelings for her estranged husband, her son Jamal (Jussie Smollett) somewhat figured it out.

Due to this, it wasn't very surprising to know that Cookie reacted very indifferently towards Lucious.

In an interview with TV Guide, executive producer Sanaa Hamri explained the dynamics between Lucious and Cookie in the upcoming episodes.

"Remember, she has said to the kids that 'The love between me and your father, it runs deep.' There's a deep emotional connection, and you feel it when you see the flashbacks. They have children together; they have a bond. To her, the marriage to Anika is beyond symbolic, and she has to walk away. I don't know what she's going to do, but Cookie is always going to come back with a vengeance. It's going to be fun to go on her journey. She's still co-CEO of Empire. Does she give up Empire? Does she clap back? That'll be fun to watch," she explained.

Meanwhile, now that Lucious and Anika are now married, it seems that the latter will receive some kind of protection from what she did to Rhonda (Kaitlin Doubleday) in season 2.

According to Hamri, Anika will continue to be in huge trouble because even if Lucious will protect her, Andre (Trai Byers) will definitely find a way to destroy her.

"Anika is in so much trouble. And of course she still has feelings for Lucious. They shared a relationship. But everybody is out for self trying to preserve his and herself, and that's what's tragic about parts of her character - she has to go to such lengths to protect herself," she explained.

When the series returns to FOX this fall, Hakeem will also most likely find revenge against his own father.

"Empire" season 3 will premiere on FOX sometime this September.
