Apple has reportedly handpicked hundreds of its employees to work on its new electric car.

Dubbed "Project Titan", the experiment is meant to challenge other key players in the electric car industry such as Nissan, General Motors and Tesla, according to a report by Global Post.

People familiar with the project claim it's underway, said The Wall Street Journal.

Under the close supervision of Apple Vice President Steve Zadesky, the initial design of the car shares common features with that of a minivan, the paper said. No images or any other details were divulged, however.

Zadesky was a former Ford engineer who became part of Apple's creative team and was mainly responsible for the development of the iPod and iPhone.

Joining him to complete the "secret team" for Titan is Johann Jungwirth, a former R&D chief executive of Mercedes Benz hired by Apple last fall, according to Treehugger.

The team is alleged to be working at an undisclosed location a few miles from Apple's headquarters in Cupertino, California.

Apple isn't the first tech giant to take an interest in e-cars. Google's been developing its own self-driving car for the past few years.

Apple has always been considered among those companies ahead of its time in terms of developing popular technologies like iPhones , iPods, iTunes, and iPads.

Recently, Apple unveiled its plan to release yet another new offering, the Apple Watch. This state-of-the-art smartwatch is slated to be available by April.
