The iPhone 7 could use some minor backing by using the latest cover glass from Corning. The company recently announced the Gorilla Glass 5 which can allegedly protect phones when accidentally dropped of up to 5.2 feet.

Apple and Corning have been known partners when it comes to the former’s flagship offerings and the iPhone could do well with some added protection. Accidental drops normally result in busted LCD screens at times but the Gorilla Glass 5 could help prevent such occurrences.

Corning’s latest cover glass not only safeguards mobile phones, it also maintains the same clarity and touch sensitivity that modern phones have to date. In the case of the iPhone 7, users’ visions will not be compromised and put to rest such concerns.

But the obvious intent of the Gorilla Glass 5 is to prevent phone damage. According to Corning, it was bared that roughly 85 percent of smartphone owners drop their device/s once annually while 55 percent have had the unfortunate case more than three times.

Corning’s Gorilla Glass 5 is now available to manufacturers so expect phones to pop up branding the new protective cover. As far as the iPhone 7 is concerned, there is a slight glimmer of hope that it could debut with the Gorilla Glass 5 despite not being among the mentioned rumored specs.

Apple and Corning have had tied before. Both have an agreement where Corning is not allowed to list the iPhone or any Apple device so a possible integration may have been done in secrecy, 9to5 Mac reported.

The 5.2 feet drop claim is an improvement from what the Gorilla Glass 4 offered. Corning’s predecessor could offer protection on falls happening at 3.2 feet which is about the pocket level or below on a rough surface.

With the added  two feet, their goal of increasing the total fall distance a phone could withstand has been achieved. Aside from the possible integration on the upcoming iPhone, no other phones have been named yet of including the Gorilla Glass 5, CNet reported.
