While "Batman v Superman" was the box office hit it was expected to be, it generated mixed reviews that divided the entire fandom. Nevertheless, Warner Bros. is moving forward with Ben Affleck's second "Batman" film, and it is rumored that the story will take place in Arkham Asylum.
The said institute is known as the home of Gotham City's most notorious criminals and Batman's biggest enemies. Many of Batman's known foes in the comic books will reportedly make an appearance in the sequel, although in smaller roles.
The Arkham Asylum arc was adapted in the "Batman: Arkham Asylum" video game, which had Batman trapped on the island while its criminal detainees roamed free. Having Batman in a contained area allows the movie to touch on various genres and tropes - it could be an action film with a bit of horror and thriller if Affleck considers incorporating some elements of "Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth." In the said material, it was implied that the island was haunted and that some supernatural activities took place, GQ reported.
In the grand scheme of things, a "Batman" movie based on the "Arkham Asylum" would distinguish itself from other DC Comic movies and superhero movies in general. It would tone down the usual grandiose and explosive visuals that take up much screen time, and instead, focus on a deeper narrative and character development.
A storyline set in Arkham Asylum would greatly benefit Batman, since he's more interesting when he's involved in smaller stories, with more related characters as opposed to when he's thrown into the major leagues facing supersized aliens.
Meanwhile, fans will get their first look at Arkham Asylum in "Suicide Squad" this August, which stars Jared Leto, Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney and Cara Delevigne.
In the meantime, the first ever trailer of "Justice League" just recently premiered in San Diego Comic Con 2016. According to Entertainment Weekly, the all-star cast of characters - Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash and Cyborg - appear in the trailer. The movie will arrive in theatres on Nov. 17. A trailer for the standalone "Wonder Woman" movie, which premieres next year also debuted at Comic Con.
