Season 2 of Netflix-produced TV series "Marco Polo" just introduced the character of Chinese actress Michelle Yeoh on its season premiere on July 1, but barely four weeks after the event, the show is hit by axing rumors.

Ecumenical News noted the lack of announcement by Netflix of a third season for the series on the life of the Chinese traveler and explorer. The speculation is that the streaming giant has alleged budget issues about the show. The historical drama’s reported financial issue could be due to a drop in ratings for Season 2.

The show’s second season, marked by a number of steamy sex scenes, has drawn mixed reaction from followers and critics. Some viewers are said to be dissatisfied with the manner the stories unfold.

According to Christian Times, Netflix – which bought “Marco Polo” from Starz – spent $90 million for the 10-episode second season, making it one of the most expensive TV shows produced.

The daily also reported on the possibility of actor Benedict Wong being removed from the show because of plans to kill the character of Kublai Khan which Wong did well, earning applause from critics. The possible exclusion of the Mongol leader from Season 3, if there would be one, is likely due to the shift in attention from Kublai Khan to Prester John and the mystery of his character.

It seems Prester John would be the main antagonist in the new season. He appeared in the finale of Season 2 and is the likely killer of Kublai Khan.
