The Russian government has expressed full support for China’s initiative to hold an open debate on international peace and security at the U.N. Security Council.
During a meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi at the U.N. headquarters in New York on Feb. 23, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov praised China and said that the open debate could also serve as an occasion to launch commemoration activities for the 70th anniversary of victory against Fascism in the Second World War.
Lavrov added that this activity would also encourage people to remember the forgotten war heroes, stir interest in history and remind people about the U.N. Charter's purposes and principles.
The Russian foreign minister assured China that it will maintain its top-level exchanges, continue their support, and further enhance their communication and unity on several international and regional issues.
Foreign Minister Wang Yi, on the other hand, had earlier suggested that the two countries should work together with other countries in organizing activities for the anniversary of the Second World War.
The Chinese foreign minister added that the activity would help preserve the lessons of the war and the victory of the world against Fascist forces.
He added that the two countries can also work together to preserve international justice and fairness as well as fulfill their roles as responsible members of the U.N. Security Council.
Wang said that the frequent meeting of leaders of the two countries would help maintain their strategic partnership and cooperation and high-level exchanges.
Chinese and Russian leaders have met at least five times last year to discuss matters involving several bilateral and multilateral issues.
