The photo indicates a major storyline from the comic book, The People claims. It is based on the "The Death and Return of Superman," the title of the multi-issue story arc from the comic book that was released in 1992-1993 and sent shockwaves among the fans by killing off Superman in a battle with Doomsday.

After the superhero's death, four different individuals popped up in the comic world posing as Superman. Later, the original Superman came back, wearing a dark uniform (similar to the one teased by Cavill) with a metallic "S" logo and a mullet. A part of this plot has already been revealed in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," where we saw the death of Superman at the end of the movie as he sacrificed himself fighting the monster.

However, there was also a hint of him being alive as the last moments showed some pieces of dirt rising from his grave. So, it is very likely that when Superman returns in "Justice League," he would be seen in the black suit, as a hero, echoing the storyline of the comic book. Lending more truth to the theory is efforts of Warner Bros.

The studio has been trying to adapt the storyline of Superman's death in a movie for long, ever since the event unfolded in DC Comics, Cinema Blend reports. The plan also includes getting him to sport the black costume, instead of the conventional red and blue attire, he always wears and now it looks like the studio is going to execute the long-standing plan.

However, it is not sure if the fans will be able to digest this temporary transformation of their superhero. Zack Snyder and company have been dealing with fans' anger for long regarding Henry Cavill's version of a dark and moody Spiderman. The fans have also expressed their reservations about the muted colors of Superman's costume in the DC extended universe.
