“Glee” actress Naya Rivera had a secret abortion during a day off from taping the hit TV musical in late 2010. She shared the incident in her memoir “Sorry Not Sorry: Dreams, Mistakes and Growing Up.”
E! News reported that Naya had the abortion when she found out she was pregnant by actor Ryan Dorsey with whom she just broke up then. The actress eventually married Dorsey in 2014 and the couple now has an 11-month-old baby, Josey Dorsey.
She did not tell Ryan at that time of the pregnancy or abortion because she wanted to focus on her career. Naya played Santana Lopez, a cheerleader and member of the glee club who eventually entered into a lesbian relationship in “Glee.”
Naya bares more details of her abortion in the Sept. 5 issue of People’s which would be released on Friday. She admitted being very scared about telling the public about her abortion. Following her revelation which elicited some negative responses, Naya tweeted on Tuesday, “I set out to write a book that was true to myself and would hopefully help others along the way. Media will always distort anything.”
Besides the abortion, Naya reveals in the memoir that she fought anorexia during her teen years and had breast augmentation surgery when she was 18. She avoided food in every way she could and either threw away the food that her mother packed or gave it away. Her memoir comes out on Sept. 13, one copy of which she would give to her son.
At one point, she was so hungry she started to shake and decided to eat an apple. Naya recalled, “I just sat there and held it up to my mouth,” she details. “It was like the two sides of my brain competing, one telling me to ‘eat it, it’s just an apple,’ and the other telling me, ‘no, no, no — that’ll ruin everything,’” quoted the New York Post.
