In fact, the delay in the former has been caused by the latter only as the author is trying to complete both so that they can hit the stands simultaneously. Also, the sixth edition is the longest in the series and Martin needs time to bring it to a proper conclusion.

As for the plot of "Winds of Winter", it is not very clear which direction the story would take but many are of the view that Jon Snow's much-speculated parentage would be confirmed in it. The same also holds true for the seventh season of the HBO show as well. The sixth season has already hinted at Jon being the son of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen and not the bastard of Ned Stark.

A Reddit user has come up with an exciting news about the "The Winds of Winter." According to the user's revelation, Penguin publishing has added a new ISBN number at the ISBN office and therefore, it is being speculated that the book could be closer to release than what readers think. Still, the wait would take a fair amount of time as Harper Collins reportedly registered the ISBN number an year ago.

It is worth mentioning here that Martin has not said anything about the timeline of the books. He only admitted to working hard so that it gets completed as soon as possible. He also acknowledged his weakness in terms of meeting deadlines.
