It seems that superbug has raised more controversies in the United States, according to Huffington Post
U.S. House Representative Ted Lieu, a democrat from California, recently mentioned in a letter that there should be a congressional committee hearing on this outbreak. Lieu is said to be very disheartened and bothered because the 'superbug' is drug-resistant and could easily pose risk all over the nation.
In the letter, Lieu states, "If unmitigated, there will be a faster rise of the outbreak of CRE which has much danger to us. A superbug infection can kill not only the patient who was exposed to a tainted duodenoscope but also family members, friends, and hospital staff who interacted with the patient."
Sources revealed to the Daily Mail that there were some officials who stated that the duodenoscopes that were inserted on the throat of the patients for the gastrointestinal procedures have contributed to the spread of the dangerous bacteria.
This then led to two more deaths. Five people who were exposed from the said procedure are under treatment. Hopefully, if their immune systems are strong enough to fight off the bacteria, they will survive.
Moreover, there were 179 people have been exposed to the bacteria, and their exposures can also be potentially fatal, according to some UCLA personnel.
More efforts on the part of the United States Center for Disease Control and Prevention's scientists are done to ensure that the scopes will not be the cause to spread the bacteria. They are currently designing another detailed procedure to prevent the scopes from spreading the superbug.
At present, more congressmen are considering the suggestion of Representative Lieu for a faster response on how to suppress the spread of the superbug.
