Kareena Kapoor who played the role of Khan's doctor girlfriend in the movie might not reprise her role in the sequel. She played the role of Pia Sahasrabuddhe, the daughter of the dean in the prestigious Imperial College of Engineering Dr. Viru Sahasrabuddhe (Boman Irani).

The writer Abhijat Joshi is working on the script of the sequel and he mentioned in a press meet that he has something great in mind. ''We have an idea for the 3 IDIOTS sequel, a MUNNA BHAI part three, and also for a PK sequel; but the PK and MUNNA BHAI sequels interest me the most. So, I think the 3 IDIOTS sequel may happen in the future, but these two I really want to work on'' is what he clarified further.

The prequel had a budget of 55 Crore INR (USD 12 Million) and the ensemble star cast had pulled the urban moviegoers to the theatres. It made a whopping box office collections of INR 392 Crore (USD 86 Million) in India. It collected INR 564.69 Crores in total which includes overseas collections too. And till date there are popular demands of the movie on various streaming channels and the DVD sales are still on.

The prequel is based on the best-selling novel by IIT-IIM alumni Chetan Bhagat, who left his plush corporate career to become a writer. The name of the novel is ''5 Point someone'' which talks about the plight of Indian youth which is forced to take up engineering or medicine by their parents as they offer secured future to their wards. The wishes of the children are often not considered and the natural talents are often smashed.

According to Deccan Chronicle, Khan is interested in the sequel and since it was the first Hindi film to cross the 200 crore mark in the box-office, the viewers can expect more from the sequel.

Erstwhile popular director turned producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra who had produced the original film might produce the sequel too. Nothing about the plot of the sequel is revealed till date; however, it is possible that the romance of Khan's character with the character of Kapoor might blossom in the sequel. They were shown at the verge of getting married in the prequel.

Also at the end when the real name of Khan's character was revealed as Phunsukh Wangdu, and it was established that he has become a famous scientist who has 400 patents to his name, it is possible that his achievements might be highlighted in the sequel.
