Samsung has released a statement on Saturday night asking Galaxy Note 7 users to stop using the smartphone or charging it.

The announcement has come following a mishap where the handset caught fire while being charged. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission has urged Note 7 users to put their phone off and stop using and charging it any further as soon as they receive the warning. "This consumer warning is based on recent reports involving lithium-ion batteries in certain Note 7 devices that have resulted in fires," CPSC said as quoted by PC Mag.

"These incidents have occurred while charging and during normal use, which has led us to call for consumers to power down their Note 7s."

Following the reports of the explosion of the device during use or while charging alarmed Samsung. The company then recalled 2.5 million phones last week to inspect the issue with the handset. As soon as the examination indicated serious risk on the Note 7 owners, the company warned airline passengers not to switch on their mobile phones on their journey by air. It also asked them not to charge their mobiles while on board.

Where the United Arab Emirates banned the use of Samsung Galaxy Note 7 on the Etihad and Emirates airlines, Singapore Airlines, Virgin Australia and Qantas also imposed similar restrictions for their passengers, BBC reported.

Samsung, in its statement, addressed the mass and said that its customers' safety is its top "priority." "Until a replacement device is provided, Samsung asks all customers with a Galaxy Note 7 smartphone to power down your device and return it to its place of purchase at your earliest opportunity," the statement read. The company added in its statement that the replacement for the device would be handed over to the customers from Sept. 19.

To claim a Samsung handset in exchange for Galaxy Note 7, customers can directly call Samsung at 1-800-SAMSUNG, or connect with their carrier. US cellular callers can call on to 1-888-944-9400.
