After years of being held by Sony Pictures, Spider-Man has finally returned to Marvel, making his debut in "Spider-Man: Homecoming" all the more heartwarming. The new Spidey, brought to life on the big screen by actor Tom Holland, received praises from fans when he first joined the Avengers in "Captain America: Civil War."
"Spider-Man" underwent a lot of changes throughout the last decade. Toby McGuire's and Andrew Garfield's individual approaches to the character had their own unique charm and quality. What visibly set them apart from one another were their costumes.
Among the current roster of Marvel Cinematic Universe heroes alone, the characters go through costume re-design every time they appear in the movie. Case in point: Chris Evans costume in "Captain America: The First Avenger" was more vintage and colorful as opposed to his darker, more fitted and modern outfit in "Civil War."
Evidently, Holland's costume as Spider-Man has its own twists compared to that of McGuire's and Garfield's. In an interview with costume designer Judianna Makovsky, it was revealed that the decision to use the classic Spider-Man outfit was mutually agreed upon by the entire Marvel team.
"I think in our initial meetings, everyone agreed it would be great to get back to the original Spidey, and really have that image that we all had when we first read the comic," Makovsky told IGN. "Again, keeping it simpler, taking it back to its roots and the original color."
Based on Spider-Man's appearance in "Captain America: Civil War," his costume definitely paid homage to John Romita Sr.'s original design of the suit during the Silver Age of comic books. According to Movie Pilot, the distinctive "rotund, bow-legged red spider on the back" is definitely reminiscent of the early Spider-Man comic books.
The spider logos on McGuire's and Garfield's costumes weren't as round, and were instead made thinner, more defined to look modern.
"Marvel knows what they want, and they know what the next films are, and I don't. They kind of decide, with visual development and with me, which direction they're going to go, which image from the comic is the one that they want to continue on... Sometimes they sketch it, sometimes I sketch it. It's a very amorphous project," Markovsky said about working for the superhero franchise.
"Spider-Man: Homecoming" will be released on July 7, 2017.
