CSN reported that the cancellation rumors started when Woodley opened up about not agreeing with Lionsgate's decision to tweak some parts of the movie and not going along with the original storyline of the novel.

During a recent interview with Woodley, she was very vocal about disagreeing with the production company's decision to tweak the storyline of the film, wherein she stated that "They haven't finalized any decisions, so it's actually a moot point to talk about it now, out of respect to Lionsgate and everyone involved. I'm not exactly sure where they stand so we are kind of all in a limbo game."

However, the actress' statements neither confirm nor deny if she's still going to reprise her role as Tris in the upcoming "Divergent: Ascendant" film.

It is also reported that Lionsgate plans to change how the movie would actually end. A lot of fans who are actually hooked with the novel and have already read the final part of the book know that it would have a bitter ending, and because of this, the production company wants to change it in order for the film to have a happy ending and to form an opportunity to actually create a fourth installment the "Divergent" franchise.

It is undeniable that Woodley knows her stand with regards to the movie's future, though her co-star Theo James has not yet given any statement regarding his involvement with the film.

Movie News Guide reported that one reason why James' statement hasn't been heard is because he's been avoiding the lime light for quite some time in order to spend some quality time with his fiancée Amanda Kearney.

It is also rumored that the actor is actually planning to go through with their wedding right after he finish filming for the "Divergent" series. With this news of a possible cancellation, there's a chance that James would actually get hitched earlier than expected.

Lionsgate hasn't released any official statement yet regarding "Ascendant's" future.

"Divergent: Ascendant" is expected to be released sometime in 2018.
