Losing one’s virginity is definitely not a taboo in the current TV landscape, whether the women giving up their purity are reality stars or TV series characters. The latest TV character to have sex finally for the first time is Jane (Gina Rodriguez) after she would have sex with husband Michael (Brett Drier).
Since the show’s title is anchored on the star’s virginity, should the producers now change the title since “Jane the Virgin” – aired Mondays at 9 p.m. on The CW - would sound odd? E! News reported on Tuesday that Jane got the go-signal from Michael’s doctor to have sex.
And like any woman who had not made love before, Jane is a little nervous about her first night in bed with Michael. Jennie Snyder Urman, creator of the TV series, explained, “There's so much pressure! There's so much pressure on Jane to make the perfect moment, there's so much pressure on us in the writers' room to make the perfect moment.”
However, Urman hinted that Jane’s big moment may not be as what she planned it to be. Just like their honeymoon night when Michael was shot before they could consummate their marriage, so he ends up in the hospital instead of inside their romantic hotel suite.
Urman said they would change the show’s title depending on the episode’s theme. The original title “Jane the Virgin” would initially appear and then a line would cross out the word “Virgin.” Urman said among the title they are considering are “Jane the Guilty Catholic” or “Jane the Person Who Doesn’t Like Her Mom’s New Boyfriend,” according to Hollywood Reporter.
The creator continued, “It's a way of saying that people are so much more than sex. She is a person with so many different identities and so many different things that make her character interesting, so once we get rid of the virgin thing then we can open it up to other things that define her.”
