Philips Lighting, a world leader in its field, and Chinese mobile Internet giant Xiaomi recently announced they are teaming up to develop a smart home lighting technology, Cnet.com reported.

As Philips partners with Xiaomi, the endeavor is expected to develop linked LED lighting units for the latter's wireless home platform.

The undertaking, which marks as another landmark innovation in the Chinese smart home industry, also covers creating iOS and Android mobile applications in order to control the lights.

John Wang, the market leader of Philips Lighting for Greater China, remarked in a statement that in the next few months, "Xiaomi customers using its smart home ecosystem will be able to choose from an even broader family of well-designed connected LED luminaires that work flawlessly on the Xiaomi platform."

Further lauding the new endeavor, he shared: "Bringing together Xiaomi's winning platform and online marketing philosophy with Philips Lighting's superior connected lighting technology is a great idea."

Meanwhile, Liu De, co-founder of Xiaomi and vice president and head of Mi Ecosystem, emphasized why this partnership could be hailed significant in advancing the smart home technology in the country.

"Philips Lighting is a global leader in the lighting industry with a history of over a hundred years, while Xiaomi has built a smart home ecosystem with the largest user base and the widest variety of products in China. By contributing respective advantages from both companies, Xiaomi and Philips Lighting will provide customers with the best smart lighting solutions through this cooperation," Liu said.

The technology will be available for purchase via Xiaomi's retail platforms, which are already currently offering smart LED lighting units from Philips.

According to reports, the joint venture company will by owned by Xiaomi and Philips Lighting by a 30-70-percent deal. Nonetheless, other financial details are yet to be disclosed.

Previously, the two firms have joined hands to launch a connected desk lamp.
