Death by selfie has become a trend nowadays with rising incidents worldwide. Experts and researchers were led to conduct an investigation to somehow narrow down data that could be helpful in resolving the concern. And as of the latest statistics, India tops selfie deaths, followed by other countries including the US and Pakistan.
With the introduction of smartphones and other image capturing devices, taking selfie has become easier and more convenient. Such technological improvement led more and more individuals to be more narcissistic and even daring when taking their selfies. However, the downside of such improvement and drastic change of behavior has been widely felt with the increased death caused by taking selfies.
It was in March 2014 that the first reported case of death by selfie or "killfie" has been recorded. As per BBC, the current record has reached more than a hundred. The 127 recorded incidents of selfie deaths across the world has been topped by India having 76 death toll. Such record is then followed by Pakistan with nine and United States with eight recorded cases.
As a result of the statistical increase, researchers and experts alike are now developing a selfie safety app. According to CBC News, researchers have already built a prototype of the app that aims to warn future selfie-takers of the potential danger of their activity.
From the said recorded events and almost 140,000 selfies posted on Twitter, the team of researchers managed to create the safety app that could hopefully warn picture takers. Apart from that, the app could also prevent the smartphone from launching its camera app before moving to a much safer area.
Apart from safety concerns when taking a selfie, experts also believed that "Pokemon Go" players could also benefit from the safety app. With enough data, developers of the app see the tool as a significant help to make "Pokemon" players and normal individuals become more aware of the environment around them. Thus, mitigating or avoiding death by selfie.
