After Google officially unveiled Android 7.1 Nougat last month, it promised that the new OS would roll out starting from December. Now, an exact release date has just been confirmed for Nexus users and it will apparently coincide with the Dec. 5 security patch release.

According to Vodafone Australia, Nexus 6P, Nexus 6, Nexus 5X and Nexus 9 are among the eligible devices to receive the new OS. The update comes shortly after Android 7.1 Nougat Developer Preview was released and brings the featured phones to parity with Google's Pixel and Pixel XL.

Initially, when Android Nougat first launched, it had come to the Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, and Pixel C through the Developer Preview. Then, Android enthusiasts proceeded to wait for the second version of the Preview, which would add support to the remaining devices along with Android One. However, until now, only Nexus 9 has been added to the list.

According to 9to5 Google, Android 7.1.1 allows developers to insert app shortcuts and has introduced some Gboard functionality with rich content and GIF entry into Android. However, unlike Apple's iOS app, one requirement is for third-party developers to add support to their apps.

Android Nougat has also introduced new emoji, which feature a broader range of professions for both men and women. More fresh additions include Doze Mode, fingerprint API and granular permissions.

With Android 7.1.1 Nougat being more than a patch, the Over-the-air update will have a size of about 650MB, which is a bit larger for the Nexus 6P. Vodafone has provided the details of the rollout as follows:

For day one to day three, 10000 phones will be selected randomly and assumed to be eligible. Then users will be alerted through FOTA push message. Users can also check for the update manually.

From day four to day 13, Google will select 10 percent of the remaining pool. Users will be required to check manually for the update. Then, during and after day 14, all devices will become eligible for the update.

In line with Vodafone's release notes, Google will push the update on Dec 6 starting at 5:00 PM AEST although the security patch is dated Dec 5 and harmonizes with Google's usual release pattern.
