The more recent "Star Wars" movie franchise, starting with "Stars Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens" and soon "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," makes a big shift by putting a woman in a lead role. Women are going to be more well-represented in the "Star Wars" franchise both on screen and off screen as reports reveal that female directors and screenwriters are being considered to work on future "Star Wars" films.

In an LA Times article about gender inequality in Hollywood, Adriana Alberghetti revealed that she has booked meetings for four female directors and three female screenwriters who were reportedly in the running to helm future "Star Wars" movies.

"Behind closed doors, people at the studios are saying, 'we know we have a problem. How do we get more women behind the camera?" Alberghetti commented about getting female writers and directors more opportunities.

Given that Rian Johnson is already confirmed to be working on "Star Wars: Episode VIII" while Phil and Chris Miller for the "Han Solo" movie, it is likely that the still unnamed female director and screenwriter will work on a third "Star Wars" anthology movie. The project is said to arrive a year after the release of "Star Wars: Episode IX," which will come out in 2019.

"Star Wars was always a boys thing and a movie that dads could take their sons to, and though that's still very much the case, I was really hoping that this would be a movie that mothers could take their daughters to as well," "The Force Awakens" director J.J. Abrams told The Hollywood Reporter about his hopes for the franchise.

The new "Star Wars" film now have a stellar cast of actress. Joining Carrie Fisher are Daisy Ridley, Lupita Nyong'o and Gwendolyn Christie. In December this year, fans will see Felicity Jones as the lead of "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story."

Meanwhile, "Star Wars: Episode VIII" release date has been scheduled for Dec. 15, 2017. It is rumored that Luke Skywalker will return to train Rey to become a Jedi. There is also a lot of concern regarding how Leia will move forward after learning that her very own son, who now goes by the name Kylo Ren, killed Han Solo.
