The Chen Zhongshi-written novel “White Deer Plain” will soon get a TV series adaptation after its huge success in the silver screen back in 2011.
In a CRI News report, the TV series will star Shaanxi-born actor Zhang Jiayi and will be co-directed by Liu Huining and Liu Jin.
"White Deer Plain" follows the story of several generations living in Shaanxi's White Deer Plain.
The Chinese epic tale of two families has immortalized the obstacles and tribulations the peasants have battled with during the various periods of historical junctures and social turmoil.
Apart from the hardships faced by the characters, the plot also revolves around the changes that have taken place in the Chinese countryside throughout the previous 50 years.
The movie adaptation was directed by Wang Quan'an, with Zhang Fengyi on the lead.
The film has competed at the 62nd Berlin International Film Festival and bagged the Silver Bear for Outstanding Artistic Achievement for Lutz Reitemeier's world-class cinematography.
The original novel was written in 1992 and has since earned the admiration of Chinese nationals for the book's outstanding depiction of the country's historical heritage. It has received high honors in China and has long been regarded as a classic among epic novels.
"White Deer Plain" was not the first to land on TV after a big-screen treatment.
In 2014, Mo Yan-penned "Red Sorghum Clan" was made into a TV series starring Chinese actress Zhou Xun. Its 1987 movie version was produced under the helm of then-newcomer Zhang Yimou and starred Gong Li.
