Special Interest Group has announced their new official Bluetooth 5 spec standards. In just a few months, new devices will have the said improved tech.

Gone are the days of using infrared to transfer files. Bluetooth has been widely used across devices for those who want to share stuff on their phone to a friend without having to use the Internet.

Bluetooth 5 will be the new standard that will take over Bluetooth 4. The latter will still be supported as new standards typically work with older ones as well.

The new Bluetooth 5 specs claim that it will be twice as fast and the range will be four times greater than its predecessor, Engadget reported. It will also have eight times the amount of data in capacity that can be sent wirelessly which means that sending FHD videos and such will be a breeze.

Bluetooth is not only used by smartphones. The new Bluetooth 5 could also be used in helping push the Internet of Things. With a faster and more capable standard, more IoT products could improve in the future.

The Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) variant will also get upgraded with the new Bluetooth 5 spec which uses far less power overall, PC World reported. Smart homes will consume less power and will be more efficient thanks to the new standards set by SIG.

For instance, IoT products in large homes would have little to no difficulty in communicating with each other. They could also be recharged less.

Unfortunately, the audio quality will not change. Experts believe that the quality and efficiency of Bluetooth sounds will improve in 2018.

Bluetooth 5 is expected to appear in new devices within the next half year or so. It should be a noticeable improvement for those who like to transfer files and use IoT products at home.
