The year is almost at its end and it is time to look at the movies that earned big in 2016. The box office was dominated by fantasy and sci-fi movies, but the figures below are only for the domestic release in the United States and not for their worldwide sales.

On top of the list is "Finding Dory" that grossed $486 million, according to Box Office Mojo.  It is the sequel and spinoff to 2003's "Finding  Nemo" that was also produced by Pixar Animation Studios. The latest comedy-drama adventure features the voice of Ellen DeGeneres for the main character Dory, a regal blue tang who suffers from short-term memory loss. The 3D computer-animated film's voice cast also include Albert Brooks as Marlin, the overprotective clownfish and Nemo's father.

Second is "Captain America: Civil War," a superhero film that features Marvel Comics' superhuman characters. It seems, however, that their skills and powers were not enough to land them on top. Total domestic gross of the "Captain America" sequel stands at $408 million to date. It is the 13th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

"The Secret Life of Pets" from Universal Pictures comes in at third with $368 million. It is another 3D computer-animated adventure film about Max, a Jack Russel Terrier, and Duke, a large shaggy mongrel. Because of jealousy, both domesticated dogs end up on the streets of Manhattan.

Coming in at fourth place is "The Jungle Book (2016)" that has garnered a total of $364 million domestic sales. The fantasy adventure film is based on Rudyard Kipling's collective works that also inspired the 1967 movie version.

"Deadpool" closely follows at $363 million. It was released in February and became the blockbuster movie for the month. It also ranked first for an opening weekend in winter, ranked first for President's Day weekend, and it holds the opening weekend record for a Rated R movie.

Other notable movies that made it to the top 10 biggest domestic grossers of 2016 include "Zootapia with $341 million, "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" with $330 million, and "Suicide Squad" with $325 million. The last two movies on the list include "Doctor Strange" that gained $218 million and "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" that raked in $191 million.

Meanwhile, going back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, three films are scheduled to be released for next year, namely "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" on May 5, "Spider-Man: Homecoming" on July 7 and "Thor: Ragnarok" on Nov. 3, reported Den of Geek
