The first half of "Arrow" Season 5 showed the various challenges that beloved characters have had to deal with that included the mysterious new threat Prometheus. Latest spoiler news teased of Felicity's (Emily Bett Rickards) transformation in the upcoming episodes of the CW series.
"Arrow" Season 5 have shown how Felicity and Oliver (Stephen Amell) both moved on from their failed romance. Oliver focused on his day job as the mayor of Star City and in training a new Team Arrow, while Felicity found comfort in a new relationship with Billy (Tyler Ritter).
However, Felicity's happiness with Billy was short-lived after Oliver accidentally killed him as shown in the midseason finale of "Arrow" Season 5. Prometheus tricked the Green Arrow into thinking that the man he saw inside a dimly-lit room full of mirrors was him.
Wearing the same attire and face mask, the said man is actually Billy with his mouth covered up and a weapon duct-taped to one hand. After firing three arrow shots that hit the man's chest, Oliver belatedly realized that he fell victim to Prometheus' trap and unintentionally killed Billy.
Billy's death will push Felicity to explore a different side of herself in the back half of "Arrow" Season 5. Showrunner Wendy Mericle shared in an interview with TVLine that Billy's demise will serve as the catalyst that will transform Team Arrow's Overwatch into a darker character.
Oliver may have killed Billy but Felicity will not blame the Green Arrow and will direct her anger towards Prometheus, according to Mericle. The showrunner stated, "She recognizes the manipulations that have led to this situation."
Mericle also teased that Felicity's turn to darkness will be aided by some people whom she met in the past. With Team Arrow's Overwatch bent in extracting revenge for Billy's death, Felicity will do some things that are considered "morally questionable."
In other news, "Arrow" posted high viewership shares during the CW crossover event with three other superhero TV shows. Aired on Nov. 30, "Arrow" Season 5 episode 8 was watched by 3.55 million viewers, according to Deadline.
"Arrow" Season 5 will return to the small screens in January 2017 on the CW. Watch the a clip from the midseason finale below:
