The number of suspensions of varsity teams this year increase with the Princeton University men's swimming and diving team being suspended after they were discovered of saying "vulgar" and "misogynistic" comments on an electronic listserv.
Princeton University announced last Thursday that is has suspended the said squads after they were found to have said "vulgar and offensive, as well as misogynistic and racist in nature" comments which the University did not want to disclose, as reported by NBC News.
Mollie Marcoux Samaan, the director of athletics of the Ivy League school, said that the players represent the school on and off their contests and the behavior shown by both teams is against the values taught of the athletics program of the University. She added that they will not tolerate such behavior.
One can assume that the conversation between the members of both teams were talking about their female counterparts after Princeton officials said that they want to respect "members of the women's swimming and diving team."
In the past few months, a number of suspensions of varsity team members have been reported, including that of Pentucket Regional High School's entire girls' soccer squad, as reported by NECN.com. All 16 members of the team were suspended for four games after they were caught drinking.
Also, another set of varsity team members, this one in the Laurentian University, were suspended after allegedly participating in a hazing at a rookie night last September.
Both swimming and diving teams still have two more competitions before the season ends, including the Ivy League Championship in just two months.
Samaan added that the players would undergo training next month that will teach them how to use social media properly. Also, the school aims to give the suspended players lessons on how to have a positive culture between the players.
