Google Nexus 6 will get the latest Android 7.1.1 Nougat update in January 2017, the company confirmed in a statement. The handset is currently running on an Android 7.0 Nougat, which rolled out in October, but this will be replaced soon.

In a statement obtained by Android Police, Google confirmed that the latest version of the Android operating system will arrive on Google Nexus 6. In addition, the tech giant also explained that the discovery of a "last minute bug" caused the delay of the Android 7.1.1 Nougat roll out.

The bug issue has since been fixed and the rollout will start early in January 2017. The upcoming OS version that will arrive on the Nexus 6 is considered a significant upgrade since no other Nexus device received version 7.1.0 of the software.

Nexus 6 is considered as the oldest Nexus device that continues to receive software updates. Given that it is already more than two years old, it is believed that Android 7.1.1 Nougat could be the last update it will receive. Also, the new year will likely have Google focusing more on a new operating system, which is believed to be Android O. There is a possibility that Nexus 6 will no longer get the next Android OS and that Google will stop supporting it.

With the latest software update, Google Nexus 6 is expected to have cool new features like circular app icons, App shortcuts, Google keyboard update, among others. The update is also expected to simultaneously arrive with a new security patch. The new security update will arrive on Jan. 3, 2017 for Pixel and Pixel XL, Droid Life reported.

Although it was not explicitly mentioned that the security update covers Nexus 6, GSM Arena assumed it is the case. If this turns out to be true, the new Android 7.1.1 update could arrive on the first week of January 2017.
