In episode 16, it may have been a disappointing scenario for long-time "Vikings" fans as the central character of the story, Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel), finally died. At first, his second wife Lagertha cannot believe the news, but eventually accepted it towards the end of the episode.

The widow was willing to rule in place of her husband, but she needs to get rid first of those who does not agree with her leadership. She was confronted by Ivar (Alex Andersen), Ragnar's offspring with Aslaug, whom Lagertha killed previously.

Soon, Lagertha assumed her own seat of power, especially now that Kattegat has become the richest trading center in Norway. Though majority of the city agrees with the newly elected queen, Ivar challenged her mother's killer in a single combat. But Lagertha refused, and instead chose to spare the life of the legless character.

Threat is already surrounding Lagertha, with more people wanting to unseat her because of the richness Kattegat has amassed, and Ivar, one of the heirs to the seat Ragnar left when he died.
