In an article by state-run newspaper Global Times, China threatened to take revenge if U.S. President Donald Trump decides to violate the One China policy.

On her way to Central America, Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen met with senior U.S. Republican lawmakers in Houston. She also met with Texas Governor Greg Abbott.

Hours after her meeting in Houston, the Global Times released an article that stated, "Sticking to the One China principle is not a capricious request by China upon U.S. presidents, but an obligation of U.S. presidents to maintain China-U.S. relations and respect the existing order of the Asia-Pacific."

The newspaper also wrote, "If Trump reneges on the one-China policy after taking office, the Chinese people will demand the government to take revenge. There is no room for bargaining."

Texas senator Ted Cruz clarified that their meeting with the Taiwanese President had nothing to do with China.

In a statement, he said, "The People's Republic of China needs to understand that in America we make decisions about meeting with visitors for ourselves."

"This is not about the PRC. This is about the U.S. relationship with Taiwan, an ally we are legally bound to defend," he added.

The Chinese government clearly stated that China will cut all ties with the U.S. if they continue to invest in Taiwan.

"I want to stress that the Taiwan question has a bearing on China's sovereignty and territorial integrity," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said.

President Trump was clearly against the one china policy. In a TV interview, he said, "I fully understand the 'One China' policy, but I don't know why we have to be bound by a 'One China' policy unless we make a deal with China having to do with other things, including trade."
