Last March 2016, the Alpine-style cheese was titled the world champion and it marked the first time from the United States winning the prize since 1988. The American cheese Roth Grand Cru Surchoix is considered the best cheese in the world at the World Cheese Championship.

The evaluators scored it 98.8 out of 100. It was the Gruyere-like smear ripened hard cheese. It stands out of a record 2,955 entries.

The winners were published on the World Championship Cheese Contest website. The contest was held in Madison, Wisconsin last March 7 to 9 of 2016. It was revealed that the Roth's Grand Cru Surchoix was made in copper vats imported from Switzerland. The cheese was aged for at least nine months on wooden boards.

Roth's Grand Cru Surchoix is similar to Gruyere Grand Cru which is naturally nutty with caramel and mushroom undertones with a flavor character of a washed-rind Alpine style. Grand Cru Surchoix was the award-winning cheese that was pasteurized in cultured enzymes, milk, and salt. The umami of the Roth's Grand Cru Surchoix together with some small crystals melts in the mouth which are priced at approximately $18 to $25 per pound.

The president of Swiss-owned Emmi Roth USA proudly claimed that the cheesemakers in Monroe, Platteville and Shullsburg were pleased to be the leading producer of specialty cheeses and won as one of the best cheeses in the world as reported in the Wisconsin State JournalEmmi Roth USA had also won in 2014 as the best of class for a buttermilk blue cheese and a Granqueso.

Abby Despins, the spokeswoman for Emmi Roth USA explained that the game of cheese being perfected plays the important role of the whole process. Despins unveiled all the ingredients came from the local farms and markets. The milk was specially made from copper vat where cultures coagulants were added to make curd milk. The 2018 World Championship Cheese contest will be from March 6 to 8 of 2018 in Madison, Wisconsin.
