"Sherlock" Season 5 may come with the modern day adaptations of the classic stories "The Engineer's Thumb" and "The Red-Headed League." The air date of the upcoming season is yet to be confirmed.

"Sherlock" series writer Steven Moffat revealed in an interview with Vulture that he was already thinking about the Arthur Conan Doyle's stories that he can adapt for the upcoming season. He said that there are a very limited number of stories that can be adapted because most of them are too small for a thrilling 90-minute episode.

"Very, very few of the stories adapt very easily, because properly paced, you could get about 20 minutes out of a Sherlock story," Moffat said. However, he explained that with the contribution of Mark Gatiss, he has identified some stories that can be adapted to the modern theme.

According to Moffat, Gatiss has always wanted to do "The Red-Headed League" and "The Engineer's Thumb." The writer described the latter as "a slightly mad story that doesn't have a proper ending." The top favorites such as "The Hounds of Baskerville" and "The Sign of the Four," which was remade in a modern avatar as "The Sign of Three," have already been tackled.

In another interview with News WeekMoffat revealed that the team has started discussion on the probable plots for the new episodes. Dispelling rumors that the production house is looking for another channel, he guaranteed that the show will stick with BBC although they have had better offers from other competing channels.

Other rumors claim that "Sherlock" Season 5 may not see the light of the day because the main stars of the show are too busy with their Hollywood careers. In the past six years, there have been four seasons of the popular show with 13 episodes in all.

The first two seasons of "Sherlock" were very well received by critics and viewers alike. However, the euphoria around the show has been on the decline recently with the fourth season in particular.
