This January, fans of the South Korean tech giant Samsung have been treated with a brand new feature coming on the highly-anticipated Samsung Galaxy S8, which enables the said phone to function as a desktop PC.
According to a recent trademark filing, Samsung has revealed a new functionality feature that will allow users to power a desktop workstation, which will be called Samsung DeX, short for Samsung Desktop Experience.
The company is attempting to trademark the DeX application software, and by extension, the DeX Station.
The announcement was confirmed by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). In the said trademark filing, the Samsung DeX was described as an "Application software, namely, for projecting the screen of mobile device to displays via computer peripheral devices and wireless networks; computer peripheral devices; computer software for wireless network communications; computer software, namely, software for controlling user interface mode adaption."
The feature that is very close to Window's Continuum function will ship a dedicated dock for this purpose called DeX Station. According to Softpedia News, users will rely on the DeX Station in order to easily connect the handset to external monitors, even those devices that have missing USB Type-C connectivity like the upcoming flagships.
Since artificial Intelligence is gaining more production on the mobile phone manufacturing, following the famous iPhone Siri assistant, new comers such as Samsung's DeX experience will pave its way for other smartphone giants to follow the same direction.
As of now, no further reports suggest if whether the accessory will be sold separately or included as a package on the purchase.
Besides the new DeX docking station, the Galaxy S8 is also rumored to come with "infinity display" that might cover the majority of the front curved screen, which will send the fingerprint scanner on the rear panel, Trusted Reviews reported.
As per its internal chassis, Galaxy S8 is rumored to be powered by Snapdragon 835 chipset with 6GB of RAM, and a dual-pixel camera capable of object recognition.
Samsung will be skipping the launch of Galaxy S8 in the Mobile World Congress this year, but the company is expected to announce the handset on March 29. The device will then go on sale in April 21. Some say that customers in South Korea will be able to buy the phone one week earlier on April 14.
