AMD has already confirmed that all the upcoming Ryzen CPUs - the SR3, SR5 and SR7 in multi-core configurations - are multiplier unlocked and ready for overclocking right out of the box. What appears as fresh proof of this exciting feature is a leaked benchmark result involving the Zen-based processor and the GPU-taxing "Ashes of the Singularity" game title.
The AOTS benchmark that was posted by a certain AMD_FanBoy offered a glimpse of the processing might that supposedly is packed with the Ryzen chips, WCCFTech reported. The testing result revealed a CPU base clock of 3.6GHz, which is impressive enough, but when overclocking is desired the Summit Ridge chip was more than able to oblige as it registered a breakneck speed of 4.0GHz.
The same report went to explain that the Ryzen chip tested is the 8-core/16-thread variant of the SR7, which in the benchmark was labeled as a ZD prototype. Presumably, the CPU is nearer to the final version that AMD is rumored to launch real soon.
Of note is that in previous benchmark leaks on the Ryzen chips, ES or Engineering Sample was the prefix seen and with ZD now being used the indications are getting stronger that Zen SR processors have been finalized already and all set to come out.
The same publication has earlier reported that the Ryzen SR7 specifically is indeed capable of up to 4GHz clock speed on all cores but enthusiasts can further dial up to 5GHz on single core. However, stable overclocking is not only about the processor build.
"Achieving a stable overclock on all cores had very little do with the processor itself and mostly to do with the quality of the motherboard," WCCFTech said, adding that the leaked AOTS benchmark is not impossible at all with "a high-end cooler and a mature enough revision of the Ryzen processor."
On this, AMD has assured that users will get to enjoy the Ryzen CPU's overclocking feature from Day One with the ready availability of AM4 motherboards. Also, premium air and cooling solutions will be released simultaneously with the Ryzen processors.
One solid example is the announcement by Noctua, maker of custom-built cooling accessories, that at least three CPU coolers for Ryzen chips will be made available for AMD fans. "The three coolers being released are all SE-AM4 revisions of the NH-D15, NH-U12S and NH-L9x65," KitGuru reported.
This happening will be known soon as AMD CEO Lisa Su has confirmed this week that the Ryzen CPU release date will happen by early next month, likely immediately after the GDC 2017 that will run from February 27 to March 3.
