There is no doubt in anyone's mind that Stephen Curry is one of the greatest players to have ever graced the NBA. After all, he was named the league's most valuable player for the past two seasons running, while narrowly losing out on back-to-back championships with the Golden State Warriors. However, there have been questions about his form lately and whether he could contend for a third MVP title.
The first two months of the current NBA season was filled with questions such as these, especially with Kevin Durant coming in to the already stacked Warriors team. Fans speculated that with this arrival, Curry would no longer be afforded the opportunity to make a similar impact to the one he made in the previous two seasons. His scoring output since the start of the season was also noticeably lower than usual.
Curry may be back to his best though after an impressive showing in a 126-111 win against the Charlotte Hornets. He scored 39 points, which included 11 three-pointers, in addition to five rebounds and eight assists within 30 minutes of game time. However, after players such as Russell Westbrook and James Harden have been posting similar number since October of last year, it has now become a question of whether Curry could still catch up in the MVP standings.
"You know, just know, that [Curry] is capable of incredible games like tonight, and streaks, stretches - whatever you want to call it," Warriors coach Steve Kerr told the Washington Post. He added that Curry just needed some more time in order to settle in to the team's new dynamic after they added in eight new players to their ranks before the 2016-2017 campaign took place.
What was even more impressive about Curry's showing against the Hornets was that he was just two three-pointers away from tying his career high of 13 made, USA Today reported. He also sat out the entirety of the fourth quarter, but still managed to put 14 field goals past the Hornets. If Curry keeps this up, he has got more than enough time to be worthy of being called the best player in the league for the third year running.
