Nintendo Entertainment Planning and Development Deputy General Manager Yoshiaki Koizumi revealed accessories may be connected to the sides of the Switch, Time reported. He pointed out that the Joy-Con controllers can be removed from the tablet and other items could then be attached.

"I'm sure a lot of people have lots of different ideas about what might potentially get connected to the system," Koizummi stated. "Perhaps suddenly one day, we'll just pop up and say, 'Hey, now there's this', though I can't give you any examples right now."

General Manager Shinya Takahashi further explained that the console may be upgraded in the future, allowing it to cater to the changing demands of home console and handheld gamers alike. This would indicate that a more powerful version of the Switch may launch in a few years, similar to the PS4 Pro or the Xbox One Scorpio.

Nintendo has launched upgraded versions of the same console or handheld device in the past, Gamespot reported. The 3DS got rereleased as the New 3DS and the Wii's motion controller got upgraded into the Wii Motion Plus controller.

The statements do indicate that the Switch may replace the 3DS as the primary handheld gaming device. Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime repeatedly stated during the Switch presentation event that the 3DS still had a long life ahead of it but the Switch may already be planned to replace it in the long run.

No official accessory or third party peripherals have yet been confirmed for the Switch. These updates are expected to be unveiled closer to the console's launch in March. The full Nintendo Switch presentation video can be viewed below:
