The GoPro Hero 6 is one of the highly-anticipated action cameras for 2017. GoPro CEO Nick Woodman has already confirmed that the new device will be available this year but did not reveal the specs and release date.
Recently, Paul Coster of JPMorgan Securities asked Woodman about the GoPro Hero 6. The latter said there will be a new camera launch this year but there was no confirmation of the other Hero 6 models. Still, it would make sense that the Hero 6 will be the next upcoming device as the Hero 5 was released in 2016.
"Yes, we can confirm there will be new cameras and other accessories released during the year and new camera namely being HERO6," Seeking Alpha quoted Woodman as saying. "But we're not going to share any information as to the timing or any other details around the release of those new products as you can imagine."
One of the rumored specs of the GoPro Hero 6 is its spherical design. The previous cameras all have a rectangular or a square shape and one of the reasons why the company will choose the spherical design is because of the camera's supposed capability for 360-degree videos.
Facebook and YouTube have been supporting 360-degree videos with VR integration for more than a year now. The GoPro Hero 6's capability would give it an advantage over other competitors considering that the VR industry is slowly gaining more ground.
GoPro will focus on connecting the GoPro Hero 6 with the user's smartphone, Bike Radar quoted Woodman as saying before investors at an earnings call. An app may be developed to automatically upload a video edited on the phone, or users may try to livestream their feed through Facebook or other platforms.
One unconfirmed GoPro Hero 6 rumor is the capability for 8K video. The market for 8K video is not large enough as some devices are still accomodating 4K for their specs. Even the GoPro Hero 5 does not support 4K video at 60 frames per second.
More GoPro Hero 6 specs, features and release date updates are expected to be unveiled in the following months. The company may also reveal more products along the way.
