The weekend was a treat for US movie lovers. Three eye-catching movies released at the box office back to back each catering to a different kind of audience across North America and Canada. Amongst all the releases, the Lego movie dominated the box office with an estimated $55.6 million.
As noted by New York times, some analyst predicted that Lego Batman was expected to cross $60M in the opening weekend, however, could not reach that mark. Nevertheless, the movie still managed to rule the box office being the biggest opening of 2017 so far.
Meanwhile, "Fifty shades darker" ranked on the second number with an estimated $47 million. According to the Guardian, the movie could not capture hearts of audience like its predecessor that debuted with $68 million in 2015. The movie is based on the erotic novel series by EL James and stars Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan, who are trying to reprise their roles respectively.
The third space was acquired by Keanu Reeves starrer "John Wick: Chapter 2". The movie could only gather $30 million in the opening weekend, yet the collections were double from its original in 2014, which could only collect $24 million when it opened in 2014. The original Hitman flick became an instant hit on box office and the impression is helping in boosting the interest in the sequel, which is also capturing audience interests.
"The Lego Batman" is a spinoff of Warner Bros. "The Lego movie" of 2014 and was made in a production budget of $80 million. Produced under the Warner Bros. banner, the movie was expected to be an instant hit. In order to withhold audience interest in the Lego series, the Warner team plans to release another one "The Lego Ninjago" in Sept. 2017.
Apart from the three big releases, two more movies released this weekend; "Split", the M. Night Shyamalan emotional thriller that added another $9.3 million and Oscar nominee Hidden Figures, which earned another $8 million.
As reported by USA Today, each movie was able to drag their own audience without harming the other movies.
