The Dallas Cowboys are expected to decide on the fate of Tony Romo soon and the veteran quarterback is expectedly in waiting. It all boils down to either cutting or retaining the 36-year-old with the trade route unlikely to happen.

Tony Romo has made it clear that he wants to play on and this is where things get a bit complicated. The 36-year-old veteran can stay in Dallas but that would likely mean playing backup. For team owner Jerry Jones, not even their close ties could be enough to justify his humongous salary.

Trading Romo and his contract will likely be scoffed with most teams opting to go with other cheaper and possibly younger quarterbacks than inheriting Romo’s massive contract. He is due to earn $14 million in 2017, $19.5 million in 2018 and $20.5 million in 2019 according to Spotrac. That would be about $57 million for the next three years which doesn’t have a guarantee that Romo will stay healthy throughout.

With a trade unlikely to happen, the Cowboys and Romo will be talking intensely. Romo will likely be cut, the logical move that would allow him to negotiate with other teams. As far as the numbers crunch is concerned, it is unlikely to be more than two years and with the similar millions on his current deal.

Keeping him is an option even if it sounds crazy. Romo could wait for his name to be called and then spring into action, Pro Football Talk reported. He holds a good relationship with Jones but even the Cowboys team owner those this is something he may not want to pay for.

Unofficially, Romo is expected to leave. But the way he exits Dallas could turn ugly. The contract is the key issue here and the Cowboys may need to pay up eventually. Restructuring Romo’s contract is possible, all of which will depend on the compromised package.

Interested teams are waiting for all this to go down. Most will make their move on Tony Romo once the Cowboys figure out how to hit a compromise with the veteran quarterback and come up with a win-win situation.
