One of the more successful manga series, "Tokyo Ghoul" has yet to confirm the third season of their Anime series.

There have been many questions and doubts on the continuation of the Anime, and recent updates on the Tokyo Ghoul Reddit page have not been optimistic.

There were various reports that had the Anime starting in Winter of 2016 but eventually moved to 2017, but there has not been any official word from the Studio Pierrot until the end of 2016.

Reddit user SupaMika gave a bleak update last December: "No confirmation of a third season so far (if there is going to be one it will likely be announced in the next few days, but I'm doubtful it will happen at all given the relatively poor reception towards the anime and how much it deviated from the manga)."

However, the user did give insights about the upcoming "Tokyo Ghoul" movie. "The TG movie will also likely boosts manga sales in Japan I think. While a reboot would be great, it's pretty rare for anime to get them, and when they do it's usually several years later. It seems more likely that they'd either attempt an adaptation of :Re, or just not bother at all."

More insights about the movie are given by the studio's Twitter account, as translated by Crunchy Roll (h/t Comic Book.com). There was an issue with Fumika Shimizu, an actress who was supposed to play the female lead, but she decided to retire from acting.

The studio's Twitter translated: "To everyone who is looking forward to the film 'Tokyo Ghoul': We are very sorry to have caused you anxiety for the film by a series of the reports on the cast. We are currently checking the situation. (continued)

"In regard to the future, we will keep watching closely how the situation develops and discuss with the parties concerned. The latest announcements will be published on this page as soon as it comes in. We appreciate your understanding. From the all staff of the film 'Tokyo Ghoul.'"

In short, the studio is still not decided on what to do with Season 3, or even if there will be a season 3. They are still preoccupied with the movie.
