Actor Chris Evans has given justice to the role of Captain America/Steve Rogers ever since he took on the mantle in "Captain America: The First Avenger." Although the road appears to be never-ending for the characters given the massive scope of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it appears Evans is already thinking about retirement.

Upon joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Evans signed up for a six-picture deal, which started with his first "Captain American" movie. He has already completed the "Captain America" trilogy and has starred in two "Avengers" films, which means "Infinity War" and/or the fourth "Avengers" movie would be his last appearance as Cap.

Esquire magazine recently did a profile of Evans, in which it was indicated that the actor was getting in shape for the next two Avengers films, where he will reprise his role as Captain America. Both "Avengers: Infinity War" and the subsequent "Avengers" movie will be filming simultaneously starting April. After that, the 35-year-old actor is hanging up the shield and will no longer return as the iconic superhero. By then, Evans will have completed his contract with Marvel.

This resonates Evans' statement a couple of years ago. In 2014, he candidly said, "I bet by 2017, I'll be done." He has a fairly good reason for his decision to end his streak as the charming superhero: he wants to pursue other things such as directing and taking on other acting roles other than in big superhero movie franchises.

However, it doesn't necessarily that Evans is done with Marvel for good. He also said, while promoting "Age of Ultron," that continuing as Captain America is "a matter of whether or not Marvel wants to keep knocking," Digital Spy reported.

If, however, Evans does retire as Captain America, it doesn't mean the end for the character. Marvel has the option of giving the Captain America to Bucky (Sebastian Stan) or Falcon (Anthony Macky), as in the comic books. If the comics were to be followed, it's possible for Captain America's story with or without Evans. But for fans, the only problem is that it's going to be hard to imagine someone else carrying the shield.
