Judges Who Know Nothing

The 55-year-old celebrity shared that his refusal stems from his questioning the lack of knowledge by the panel of judges about singing, yet they judge the contestants who are “formidable singers in their own right,” Toggle reported. For Jacky Cheung, singing is the creative work of the singer.

However, in “I Am a Singer,” the judges interpret the feelings of the singers and their performances based on criteria they consider fit. As a result, some contestants have to please the judges and the audience which Jacky finds disdainful.

As Hong Kong’s “God of Songs” who had sold over 25 million records as of 2003, Jacky thinks the only purpose of singing competitions is to generate juicy news for media and elicit comments from the public. These two factors cause the singer’s actual performance to take a back seat.

Classic Tour

The other reason why Jacky shuns singing competition is to avoid stress which he would get if he would guest in “I Am a Singer.” In late February, he filled the 10,000 seats at the Singapore Indoor Stadium for his “Classic Tour.”

For the three-night series of concerts, Jacky sang his known ballads such as “So Far So Close,” “Love is Eternal,” “Your Name My Surname” and “I Am Really Hurt,” according to The Newspaper. In a 30-minute medley encore, he included old favorites between 1985 and 2015 such as “I Waited Until the Flower Wilted,” “Amour,” “Goodbye Kiss,” “A Thousand Sad Reasons” and “Heart Cut By A Knife.”
