With a budget of 500 million yuan ($72.63 million), the director said the movie is the biggest “tent-pole” production in his career and likely the biggest in Chinese movie history. The film was adapted by screenwriter Wen Ning from a chapter in “Journey to the West.”

“Monkey King 3: Kingdom of Women” would depict a kingdom in which only women live. However, the ruler fell in love with Tang Xuanzang, a monk, who is on a mission to India from China. He is joined in the journey by three magical companions to collect Buddhist sutras.

The red carpet event was held at the Huairou District of Beijing. Besides the cast of “Monkey King 3: Kingdom of Women,” other celebrities who attended the 7th Beijing International Film Festival were Danish director Bille August, Emir Kusturica, Aaron Kwok, Liu Yifei and Aamir Khan.
