China Electronics Technology Group Corporation (CETC) has teamed up with Australia's University of Technology Sydney (UTS) to unveil a new joint center for advanced research that will focus on information, communications and electronics.
According to a report from zdnet.com, the Australia-China Research Innovation Center in Information and Electronics Technologies (IET) will be located at UTS.
Over the next five years, the Chinese firm will be giving AU $20 million worth of fund for the project. Both parties are also expected to send out representatives who will govern and manage the center's IET.
The said center for advanced research is slated to expand into other Australian and Chinese academic institutions and into the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO).
UTS shared that this extension eyes to create a global innovation hub dedicated to IET exploration.
As for now, the joint center plans to turn its attention to advanced materials and electronics, including integrated circuits, terahertz devices and environmental and industrial centers. The researchers will also focus on quantum computing and communications.
The launching of the research hub comes after UTS established its Center for Quantum Software and Information (CQSI) in December last year.
"The CQSI is solely dedicated to the development of the software and information processing infrastructure required to run applications at quantum scale and builds upon the work undertaken by its forerunner, the Centre for Quantum Computation and Intelligent Systems," the article said.
Sharing the same goal, CETC will also focus on artificial intelligence (AI) as well as big data technologies. This goal complements its operations at its newly opened Center for Artificial Intelligence (CAI), which is also located at the UTS Sydney campus, and its work with the Global Big Data Technologies Center (GBDTC).
Last March, the Chinese and Australian governments have inked an agreement about "Dialogue on Innovation" which aims to foster the exchange of ideas between the two countries.
